When should I test?
It can seem like the wait is eternal when you are trying to conceive a baby. The waiting can be very stressful and make it hard to focus on much else. Typically the waiting time is two weeks but thanks to new technology a couple can find out very fast. Now you don’t have to wait for your period to arrive or to see if you skip it which is a very common sign of pregnancy.

The time frame though for how soon you can take a pregnancy test really comes down to what type of test you plan on taking. For example if you decide to do a home pregnancy test then it is based on the findings of hCG in the body which is a hormone that will be present when a woman is pregnant. This can be detected in a doctor’s office too when they do blood work.

The substances found in hCG will turn color and that is why you can tell with a home pregnancy test if you are pregnant or not. However, some women are pregnant but get a false test result. This is due to the fact that they have less than 5mIU/L in their urine of hCG at that time.
hCG Production
If you aren’t familiar with the term, hCG stands for Human Chorionic gonadotropin. It begins to be produced in the early states of pregnancy. The role of this hormone is to help the baby to develop correctly. It also stimulates higher production rates of the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

The outer layer of protection for a fetus is the trophoblast and that is where the hCG is going to come from early in any pregnancy. However, that can’t occur until the fetus has been securely attached to the uterus. A woman will typically begin to ovulate and to be fertile half way through a menstrual cycle.
However, it can take up to 9 days after conception for the fetus to become placed into the wall of the uterus. For some women it is as early as 7 days so that is the window you need to wait to determine if you are pregnant or not. It is important to avoid testing too early though as you may think you aren’t pregnant but you really are.
It all depends on when the body begins to produce the hCG and that varies for each woman. It can also vary for different pregnancies for the same woman. If you can’t wait for the 14 day mark you can test at 7 days but then it is recommended to do so again at the 14 day count as well.
